Youth soccer was an amazing experience for him. Playing for Oceanside United Soccer Club in the late 80s and 90s was an honor. The club was one of the best in the state and was recognized on the national and international levels. He played under Coach Jim Volpe and teammates; Mike Smith, Henry Gutierres, Shan Tarquinio, Tim Morrow, Chris Donavan, Rich Willard and many more. They successfully competed in State Cup, League Cup, and International Cup tournaments. Playing with these players was truly a blessing and they forged friendships that have lasted a life time

As a young athlete he attended middle school (1982-1983) and High School (1984-1988) in Long Beach. He played on the middle school soccer and wrestling teams. When he was in 8th grade he moved up to the HS varsity wrestling team. Moving up to HS varsity while in middle school is an astonishing accomplishment being that not even a handful of athletes ever receive an opportunity to do that. While at Long Beach HS, Wrestling and Soccer were his focus, earning honors in both sports. In soccer, he played on Varsity for four years. Making Varsity as a freshman was a difficult task in those days. His leadership qualities earned him a captain roll for two of those years. In his Junior and Senior years he was a 2x All Conference player. The wrestling program was one of the best in the country at the time. Again, his leadership qualities earned him the roll of Captain of the Varsity for two years. He was a 2x All County Finalist and an All State place winner.

Alex continued to excel during his college years. First he played at Nassau Community College and then at Syracuse University. While at Nassau, his team reached the regional semifinals for soccer. In the sport of wrestling, he was a 2x All American (NJCAA). He then transferred on a scholarship to Syracuse (NSCAA- DI) for wrestling in 1990. However, his passion to play soccer was so great that it brought him to tryouts, where he made the team as a walk-on under Coach Tim Hatkinson.

After college, he went back to Oceanside where he spent many years playing for the Men’s team under Coach Mario Gentile. His team managed to win all three cups; State Cup, League Cup, and Chase Cup. He had the honor of playing against the Metro Stars. At that time there were players on the Metro Stars such as: Tab Ramos, Thomas Dooley, Mike Petke, and Tim Howard.

During those years he also played for a Greek team called Salamina; who competed in Super League, Champions League in NY, Verizon cup, Concacaf, and USAFA. The level of play was tremendous. He played against former professional players from Russia, Germany, Italy, Serbia, Albania and many more. Playing against these players was one of the best experiences any player can ever have. In the winter months they played Futsól indoor against Argentines, Columbians, Ecuadorians, Uruguayans and many other South American players. Soccer was a different game back then, the beauty, grace and passion was unparallel to this day. Training and playing on these levels has given him the experience and passion that is needed to share with players of all ages.

Furthermore, having coached in a hand full of clubs from Brooklyn’s oldest Gjoa soccer club, to Queens’ famous Blau Weiss’ Gottschee, and now Long Islands great Alberston Soccer Club, has given him a well rounded perspective on what soccer development means for Americas youth.
